Companion Planting: Let Nature Take the Lead
When people first hear about companion planting, they often imagine a strict set of rules: this plant must grow next to that one, never plant this near that, always follow the chart. And while there’s value in those guidelines, I’ve found something even more beautiful and long-lasting—a more natural, intuitive way to companion plant, that feels less like a strategy and more like a relationship.
🌸 Nature Knows Best
Most gardeners are taught that companion planting is a science—pairing plants to boost growth, deter pests, or improve soil health. And yes, that’s all true. But over time, in my edible and herbal food forest, I’ve discovered something deeper: when I step back and give plants the space to grow together freely, they figure it out on their own.
There’s a wild, unspoken rhythm that takes over when you stop forcing everything into rows and charts. Plants form their own partnerships. Calendula appears beneath the berry canes. Tomatoes volunteer themselves in the shade of comfrey. It’s spontaneous, surprising, and honestly...magical.
🐝 A Living, Breathing System
My food forest has taught me that companion planting doesn’t need to be micromanaged. Instead, it’s a self-organizing, self-sustaining system. Herbs, trees, vegetables, and flowers mingle together—somewhere between planned and untamed—and in that mingling, a healthy balance unfolds.
Pollinators arrive. Beneficial insects move in. The soil becomes richer, year after year. Pests are minimal, yields are generous, and the whole space begins to hum with life. It’s not chaos—it’s collaboration, the way nature intended.
🌿 Chapter 6 Sneak Peek: Companion Planting & Beneficial Insects 🐞🌼
In Chapter 6 of my Edible & Herbal Food Forest Guide, I explain how I personally approach companion planting.
Yes, I absolutely use companion planting principles in my food forest. I tell you everything you need to know to successfully companion plant, including a GREAT resource book, which plants are best to use, which beneficials they bring in, and I even supply the perfect COMBINATION SUGGESTIONS! I explain how I intentionally grow plants that attract beneficial insects, protect and support each other, boost biodiversity, and supercharge growth and harvests.
But here’s the truth: I don’t stress about placing every plant according to someone else’s chart.
Instead, I work with nature, not against it. Over time, I’ve learned to trust the natural flow of the garden. I mix and match what feels right, observe what’s thriving, and let the relationships between plants evolve organically.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by companion planting “rules,” Chapter 6 is going to be a breath of fresh air. I’ll show you how to make it powerful—but also simple, natural, and FUN.
🌱 Let It Happen Organically
If you're thinking about starting your own edible and herbal food forest, here's my advice:
Let go of perfection. Trust your instincts. Trust the land. And most of all, have patience!
